The Blackfin tuna is one of the smallest species of tunas, and they have the fewest gillrakers (20-24) of any tuna. Blackfin generally have brightly colored gold bars across their black backs when first caught, but these quickly fade soon after death.

Most Blackfin are less than 10 lbs., but have been known to reach 35 lbs.
